The term “air conditioning” generally means to control the temperature, humidity and flow of air in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. An automotive air conditioning system uses a refrigerant system, a heating system, and a ventilation system to provide a comfortable environment in all weather conditions.
The refrigerant system uses a confined gas to provide cool, dehumidified (dried) air. The heating system uses heat from the engine cooling system to supply warm air. The ventilation system carries fresh outside air into the vehicle. These three systems work together to provide air conditioning, however, in the automotive world, when talking about air conditioning, it is most often referring only to the refrigerant system.
